How to: Beadweaving with thread

Last week beading daily issue had lots of pictures of intricately woven seed bead jewelry. Though I have seen loads of bead woven designs before I never attempted it as I felt it was too complicated (I have tried beadweaving with wire though..remember square ring??). But last week after seeing that particularly issue I thought, 'what sort of a beader (jewelry enthusiast) am I, if I dont know beadweaving with thread?'. After some brainstorming I turned to my omnipresent savior "Google" (actually you tube) and decided to learn the basics of beadweaving. I found a helpful video teaching Peyote stitch and I attempted it . The video looks simple and the technique is not very difficult.

so here's my first attempt at beadweaving - a cubism inspired peyote cuff. It is a little loose but I guess I'll make better ones with pratice. I got the idea for the clasp from a tutorial in Beading gem. Thanks Pearl !!

So here is my second attempt..definitely much much better than the first.... a peyote bangle

Pearlies

What are pearlies? Its a word that either refers to pearls or objects with a translucent pearl finish. Mop (Mother of pearl), Shell buttons, painted conches all fall into this category. As trims, as accessories or as embellishments Pearls and MOP have always been a part of classic wardrobe. 2010 has seen as major comeback of this classic trend of wearing pearlies. When the west is going gaga over it why should the east be far behind?
A recent article in firemountain gems reflects on how pearls are gaining huge momentum (over rubies and diamonds) ans this scenario is not limited to white pearls alone. Coloured pearls (naturally coloured, dyed, dipped, sprayed, tainted), shaped (faceted) pearls and even dyed MOP are all part of the jewelry trend for FW 2010. Featured below are some pieces from my pearlies collection.

Sayuri’s Design of the Month Contest - November Theme

Dham!! Dhoom!! Dish!! Damaal!!....Diwali comes with the sound of bursting crackers, the light of Diyas and the sparkle of new silks and jewelry. What better occasion than Diwali for a "Shubh Aaramb" or the start of something new? So I decided that the theme for the very first contest to be hosted by SAYURI would be based on " Sparkle of Diwali". But to make this concept universal I have decide the
Theme for November would be " Crystals and their sparkle"
Things to be kept in Mind:
- Crystals need to make up atleast 85-90% of your design. They can be Swarovski or ordinary cut glass crystals. They can be used in any technique.
- Concept of Diwali is just an idea (more of an inspiration I should say) and need not necessarily be your concept for design.

Easy then right? So bring out crystals and have fun with their sparkle.
Wishing all of you good luck and very very Happy Diwali !!
Look forward to seeing all your wonderful creations

Cheers
