A touch of Nail Enamel- Jewelry Refashion

I hope all of you had a great time during Diwali. My impromptu sale went well thanks to all you guys.
The Last time I was looking through my  personal old jewelry stuff I found some pieces of Jewelry worth repairing. My crystal earring and rope chain became the crystal tassel necklace for which you would have read the tutorial.
I also found more stuff like these- Two pairs of earrings which I have worn once and never again because it doesnt show on my ears. Next a one gram gold necklace which my mom bought for me ages back and it had almost blacked out.

You see most Indians like shiny stuff - whether its gold, copper or silver. We can tolerate Antique finish to an extent, but we really dont get things like patinas or oxidized stuff. Its accepted on silver to a certain extent, when its in the form of Tribal jewelry, but otherwise darkened jewelry is frowned upon.
Well we could have just gotten it dipped again but then both my mom and me are not very fond of this necklace so didnt feel like spending money on it again. So when I a read a fellow blogger's spot on coloring her stone jewelry with nail enamel, I thought, why cant I do the same with this.
So I brought out my color bar nail enamel - a dual - silverish gold and tried it out on the smaller earrings first. It worked and they looked considerably brighter. then I did the whole necklace. The result is for all to see.

I am not sure if gold on gold or silver on silver will work!! Also if try this out only with a good brand polish and apply only a single coat on metal

Excited with the result, I tried using color enamel on the earrings....the green one looks fabulous now. The picture doesnt do it any justice. Once I finished it and showed it to my mom, she showed me an AD that can come in the paper for Diamond and emerald jewelry and it was almost the same design....LOL!!! To think that I got it almost for free...:) :) I used Elle 18 green color bomb and sealed it with a clear polish

Finally, I used a cheap rose nail paint on this one and blended it with a little lavender (its not visible in the picture) and I sealed it with a clear polish
It looks a little more glam and spicy now but I still think that the style doesnt suit me too much. Maybe I'll change it one of these days

I am really in the mood for some nail enamel these days and I am working on another recycling project that uses it. I will soon be back with the tutorial of the project once its done.

Another thing which I just want to verify...to people who follow my blog through facebook - Are you able to see the blog/page updates on your home screen. I recently got to know that it wasnt visible for some people..so I am just checking...please check and tell me in your comments in this blog/FB page......Thanks

I hope you found this post interesting and got some Jewelry Refashion ideas from it
Cheers

Crystal tassel necklace - A Refashion project

I have been looking at tassel necklaces for some time and yesterday I finally decided thats it time I have one of those.
When I started out I wanted to make a tassel using thin gold chain with a nice bead & bead cap and attach it to a nice chain, so that my mom can wear it for Diwali..
But since I couldnt find the chain stash, I got irritated and went looking for old stuff that I could repair instead.
It was then I chanced this pair of crystal chandelier earrings which I bought a few years back. Stones were missing from both earrings and I have already repaired them a few times in the past.

Bugged, I took all the pieces apart and looped them together in such a way that I could make one tassel with all stones intact. I then removed the ear hooks and slightly polished the stones to get rid off any dirt.

Then I added the re constructed tassel to one end of a thick (masculine chain - one that I got from work and never have worn in the last 3 years!). But the thought of closing the chain with a lobster clasp that was already on the chain disturbed me. Anyway the clasp broke as I tried removing it but hey no worries, I picked out a long toggle (I happened to have a just a couple of those) and tried it with my earring - it fit like a glove.

So I attached the toggle bar on the other side with a jump ring and ta da..!!!! it was done and now looks quiet lovely. I like the combination of both masculine and feminine elements in it - something that on the fashion radar and will soon be up everywhere.

I realise that this is more of an informal post that my regular tutorial - so for those waiting formal instructions...here is the material list
- Earrings/ stone tassels for refashion
- A thick chain
- 2 jump rings
- A toggle bar
- nose pliers

Instructions: Get you earring tassel ready by assembling it. Add it to one end of the chain using jump rings. Add a toggle bar to the other end of the chain. Wear & enjoy!!

Resin Adventure - Creating Sucess around the world

Last week Jill and Janelle wrote to me, asking if I wanted to be a part of their World Blog hop as a part of Creating success around the world. I was so excited and immediately said yes. Blog world is all about meeting new people, sharing your ideas and learning something new everyday, isnt it? I have learnt so much about jewelry making from the internet and especially from blogs that I cant put it all in one post and whatever I say will not be enough to express my gratitude.
But the two major techniques I learnt from blogs in terms of jewelry making is wire work and Resin work. I have written a lot about my wire work experiments and will continue to do so in the future but now the present moment is with Resin.
Initially I worked only with Diamond glaze for I wanted to get the technique right before proceeding to the real resin. After what seemed like an eternity I found my way around Diamond glaze and here are a few worthwhile projects. These are pendants made from Bifocal spectacle lenses that belong to my mom. First one is an image of from my favourite childhood book King Arthur and his elephants and the second one is a miniature print of Raja Ravi Varma's painting. These are firmly backed with leather for support.

Then I got some bases and glass domes from etsy and took the DG route further. After some clouding and scraping later , I figured out the right way to do it. I must have read atleast 50 tutorials on blogs while making them. :D. I really love the meow cat earrings (top right) and the way the both the necklaces have turned out. These are sets and come with matching earrings and these are lovely reminders of Spring in fall and winter :)
Then I took a chance and ordered the only 2 oz package of Ice resin I found on internet. Though I was skeptical I had a blast working with it. As I was very busy with navaratri I was unable to convert the pieces into anything useful. So I'll do a separate post on them later.

Anyway Thanks to all of you who came by to read my blog. Feel free to look around, there are inspirations, tutorials and lapidary information to lap up. Would love if you left a comment or became a follower to keep in touch....!!All pieces showcased here are for sale and mail me with your preference to buy them

Special Thanks to Janelle for featuring three Chennai based bloggers in your blog hop. We have come together to organise a fun meet- Blogger Kootam for Chennai bloggers who are especially into arts, crafts, Design, fashion, style, makeup and beauty...Registrations are open so check it out!!

Everybody please join in and link up your blogs and get visits from your creative counterparts all over the world :)

Cheers

Bitten by the crystal bug

I was so caught up with Navaratri, golu arrangements, classes and freelance projects, that I hardly have any time to blog, let alone make something new. So here is something I wanted to blog about for last month but kept forgetting - my experiments with the crystal trend.
I originally wanted to name this post ~ Bitten by the Swarovski bug, but the company has issued a notice, that people should not refer to that name when not using original Swarovski projects and I think that it is only fair that we follow it.
From Start to finish I am a bling girl and it is in my blood that I love stones and crystals. at one point I had amassed so many stone items that I had to give them all away. I stopped wearing stones once I started working and ever since they are all sleeping in my cupboard. So when I chanced upon Ornamentea's craft page, I was inspired to make this bracelet immediately to reuse my crystal chain. I remember buying this chain and a bracelet like this many years ago during my first to a mall, in a city - Spencer plaza. It was also the first piece of branded jewelry that I bought and it was from Westside. Most of the chunky accessories I bought after that were from westside and they have gotten me loads of compliments whenever I wore them.

Price -  Rs.60

Then there is this beautiful, double strand necklace that I made using real glass cut crystals, that I sourced in Nepal for really good price. There were lying unused in my stash and finally I combined them this flower focal (like a mogappu used in Traditional Tamil jewelry) to make this necklace. Price -  Rs.300

I have another couple of strands in light green and and peacock green and I hopefully decide soon what I want to do with them. These pieces are for sale. Please contact me for purchase

Note of Apology:
Also I want to apologize to all of you doing a or review an online store that doesnt keep up its standard. This was brought to my attention by Holly. So If you are planning to order from Rising taste please do not do so!!! I usually do not go by beautiful pictures but the fact that it was recommended by a fellow blogger made me take it up. I am really sorry and promise to cross check loads of times before featuring anything in the future.

Cheers
